Newport Christmas

I have always wanted to go to Newport, RI at Christmas time, and every year I miss the opportunity. So this year I scheduled a trip for the first weekend in December, back in the beginning of November! It was an easy going trip (not typical – I usually have every second planned, but not this time, I needed the break – We drove up Friday toured and strolled and returned Sunday.

Newport Preservation Society added Christmas decorations to the Marble House, Breakers and the Elms. Delightful feather trees and wrapped gifts in bedrooms, trees and poinsettias everywhere – even giant poinsettia balls hung from the ceilings, mantels were dressed, tables topped, kitchens filled with garland and oranges. We declined the head set audio tours - they are wonderful go at your own pace and full of information; however, I enjoyed a primarily visual only tour of the Marble House and Elms – amazing how different details emerge. I enjoyed the new family tour option at the Breakers – playful and entertaining – it was nice to tour the house with a child’s perspective (well done preservation society, I hope children are using and enjoying it). An unusual treat there were a few rooms where we could photograph the Christmas display. I was delighted to photograph inside!

Marble House’s gothic room – which is an absolute masterpiece in gothic revival style – featured a photographable tree – the tree was in every shot – I attempted every angle possible. The tree was magnificent,I loved the careful attention to gothic details in the ornaments, a quiet, elegant medieval flare to the Christmas Decorations. After all, the gothic arch is my favorite arch, with ogee a close second! The Elem’s Mantels were amazing, snow cover topiary trees, sticks, cardinals all nestled in with the mantel statue. and a grand poinsettia tree was the focal point of the room.

Magnificent! What a treat to see these homes at Christmas! Newport was a Christmas buzz, tree lightings, shops elaborately decorated, and Santa comes to the Warf by way of boat!

The Number 11

I seem to be haunted by the number 11. I have found the time 11:11 is almost magical and continually appearing, it happens to follow me where and when ever I am– 11:11 – it plays peek-a-boo of sorts and usually I find it right at the right moment – but today I lay in wait to pay tribute - As this is the 11th day of the 11th month of the 11th year, at exactly 11:11, I tribute with this post an Ode to Eleven, Eleven, Eleven at Eleven, Eleven. Enjoy the findings.

Eleven is the first number which cannot be counted with a human's eight fingers and two thumbs additively.
In English, it is the smallest positive integer requiring three syllables and the largest prime number with a single-morpheme name.

It is also the second number in the "teens."
If a number is divisible by 11, reversing its digits will result in another multiple of 11. As long as no two adjacent digits of a number added together exceed 9, then multiplying the number by 11, reversing the digits of the product, and dividing that new number by 11, will yield a number that is the reverse of the original number. (For example: 142,312 x 11 = 1,565,432. 2,345,651 / 11 = 213,241.)

So I looked up 11:11 and seeing elevens and little did I know, that these numbers play significance to many – apparently I am not the only one noticing this beautiful yet haunting, palindrome – and there are many ideas about the coincidence of seeing these numbers repeated – enjoy the phenomenon:

La Traviata came to Baltimore at the Lyric Opera House last weekend – Beautiful, Romantic, Tragic. Bravo, Bellisimo, Cheers to Baltimore Opera! I was fortunate to attend the opening night as a guest with friends Amy and Phil (Phil is in the Orchestra). While opera is not for everyone, it is delightful, albeit lengthy, but truly a delicious pageantry - a feast for the eyes, ears, and heart. Music and tale come to life with amazing arias and enchanting costumes all set on the backdrop of an amazing elaborate and decadent stage, visually sweeping you away to another place and time.

I have been to a few Operas, my first being a sophomore in college “La Boehme”, you never forget your first opera. I have listened to many more courtesy of WBJC 91.5 Saturday Opera Fest – and I especially enjoy the Broadcast of the Met Opera performances(Launched in 1931, the Metropolitan Opera’s Saturday matinee broadcasts are the longest-running continuous classical program in radio history.) I have never watched the Met Opera’s live visual broadcast in movie theaters – however I may have to try that venue too http://www.amctheatres.com/TheMet/

In the Fall of 2009, I came to the Baltimore Opera Company’s Performance of Aiada also by Verdi – it was the last opera before closing it’s doors and going under. Unfortunately, I wasn’t terribly surprised at the opera company’s own tragic fate. The Baltimore Opera Company’s Slogan: – I kid you not: “Opera: It’s better than you think, it’s got to be.” the power of positive thinking and brand marketing basics were ignored with those few and incredibly uncomfortable words (I cringe to think of them). The Egyptian story was preformed beautifully, unfortunately the digital projection style set left much to be desired – it wreaked of 1980’s video game technology – with the occasional horizontal lying Cleopatra styled graphic moving screen saver – like a moving target ready to be shot at by children in an arcade. It was distracting, especially as a great part of the opera experience is the interaction of performers and the set – together they tell a compelling story – the set is enticing, the performers provocative. I want to be excited and intrigued; I want to brought into the performance before it begins – with a visual appetizer so to speak.

With the invitation, I was excited to go although not sure what to expect. I was amazed and impressed, another bravo for Baltimore Opera! I add my sentiments in agreement to Megan Ihnen’s review found on Opera Pulse “Grand Opera is undeniably back in Baltimore and as a city and arts community we are better off for it. The gorgeous sets, beautiful singing, talented musicians, and stage direction was a reward for all of the hard work it takes behind the scenes to make opera happen. The enthusiasm is still there both on stage and in the audience. This is no longer an opera company taking gratuitous risks to appease some mythical “public” but a company that is relying on its strengths to bring high quality performances to Baltimore. I can think of no better way to rebuild opera’s presence here than to strive for excellence and value in each facet of the company. The Story: Opera Synopsis: La Traviata

ACT I. In her Paris salon, the courtesan Violetta Valéry greets party guests, including Flora Bervoix, the Marquis d'Obigny, Baron Douphol, and Gastone, who introduces a new admirer, Alfredo Germont. This young man, having adored Violetta from afar, joins her in a drinking song (Brindisi: "Libiamo"). An orchestra is heard in the next room, but as guests move there to dance, Violetta suffers a fainting spell, sends the guests on ahead, and goes to her parlor to recover. Alfredo comes in, and since they are alone, confesses his love ("Un dì felice"). At first Violetta protests that love means nothing to her. Something about the young man's sincerity touches her, however, and she promises to meet him the next day. After the guests have gone, Violetta wonders if Alfredo could actually be the man she could love ("Ah, fors'è lui"). But she decides she wants freedom ("Sempre libera"), though Alfredo's voice, heard outside, argues in favor of romance.

ACT II Some months later Alfredo and Violetta are living in a country house near Paris, where he praises their contentment ("De' miei bollenti spiriti"). But when the maid, Annina, reveals that Violetta has pawned her jewels to keep the house, Alfredo leaves for the city to settle matters at his own cost. Violetta comes looking for him and finds an invitation from Flora to a party that night. Violetta has no intention of going back to her old life, but trouble intrudes with the appearance of Alfredo's father. Though impressed by Violetta's ladylike manners, he demands she renounce his son: the scandal of Alfredo's affair with her has threatened his daughter's engagement ("Pura siccome un angelo"). Violetta says she cannot, but Germont eventually convinces her ("Dite alla giovine"). Alone, the desolate woman sends a message of acceptance to Flora and begins a farewell note to Alfredo. At her soirée that evening, Flora learns from the Marquis that Violetta and Alfredo have parted, then clears the floor for hired entertainers - a band of fortune-telling Gypsies and some matadors who sing of Piquillo and his coy sweetheart ("E Piquillo un bel gagliardo"). Soon Alfredo strides in, making bitter comments about love and gambling recklessly at cards. Violetta has arrived with Baron Douphol, who challenges Alfredo to a game and loses a small fortune to him. Everyone goes in to supper, but Violetta has asked Alfredo to see her. Fearful of the Baron's anger, she wants Alfredo to leave, but he misunderstands her apprehension and demands that she admit she loves Douphol. Crushed, she pretends she does. Now Alfredo calls in the others, denounces his former love and hurls his winnings at her feet ("Questa donna conoscete?"). Germont enters in time to see this and denounces his son's behavior. The guests rebuke Alfredo and Douphol challenges him to a duel.

ACT III. In Violetta's bedroom six months later, Dr. Grenvil tells Annina her mistress has not long to live: tuberculosis has claimed her. Alone, Violetta rereads a letter from Germont saying the Baron was only wounded in his duel with Alfredo, who knows all and is on his way to beg her pardon. But Violetta senses it is too late ("Addio del passato"). Paris is celebrating Mardi Gras and, after revelers pass outside, Annina rushes in to announce Alfredo. The lovers ecstatically plan to leave Paris forever ("Parigi, o cara"). Germont enters with the doctor before Violetta is seized with a last resurgence of strength. Feeling life return, she staggers and falls dead at her lover's feet.

I especially enjoy the long and dramatic death scene, photographed above: Violetta is cured by her lover’s return which accompanies his regret, understanding and reconciliation - briefly she feels no pain, she is exhilarated by love’s return, then in a drop, dead. Alfredo is beyond himself with her tragic end, he came too late, she was taken from her. The music builds to these moments – you can’t help but clap in the thrill and drama of the moment. Well played.

Adventures in Singapore: Chapter 14: The Wet Market

Many Ex-Patriot’s are intimidated by the wet market shopping experience. This is where the locals go to get their fresh goods like fruits, vegetables and meats. Much better prices than the regular grocery store, there’s also the link to local culture – sellers tell you which fruits are ripe – describe an unusual fruit or vegetable and tell you how they prepare it. Beautiful Market, sights, sounds,the bustle of shoppers, and smells – fruity floral with wafts of durian, and dead fish and meat – sometimes a little pungent. People going about their business, and me- the tourist, photographing the experience! Jen and Jeff hadn’t taken photos of the wet market yet – I guess that would be like me taking photos in an American market – but then I realized, I do just that at home too – I love the look of fruits and vegetables piled on top of each other – raw beauty. My market purchase: a bag of green tomatoes… I was so excited - yum! I had fried green tomatoes in March, in Singapore! Mmmm!

Adventures in Singapore: Chapter 13: Sri Mariamman Temple

Still in Chinatown we rounded the corner and saw the magnificent, ornate Sri Mariamman Temple. It was amazingly intricate and unique, I had never seen anything like this before. I had to go in, we were in time for visiting hours, and could hear the music beyond the walls where the main shrine was. Ethne (3) and I took our shoes off, as was required for entrance (huge pile of shoes at the door) and walked around, enjoyed the interesting sights, sounds and smells – burning incense and offerings at the shrines. There as a fee for bringing in a camera so we just walked around. Emma, Jen & Jeff waited for us outside. Beautiful, and a little creepy – some of the statues were not ones you’d want to meet up with in a dark alley. I did take a few photos of the entrance, perimeter and through the wall openings of the compound.

The Sri Mariamman Temple is Singapore's oldest Hindu temple. It is an agamid temple, built in South Indian Dravidian style. The Sri Mariamman Temple was founded in 1827 by Naraina Pillai, eight years after the British East India Company established a trading settlement in Singapore. The most outstanding feature of the temple is its impressive gopuram (entrance tower). The gopuram rises above the main entrance along South Bridge Road. It is richly embellished with six tiers of sculptures of Hindu deities, other figures and ornamental decorations. The tower tapers up towards to a moulded ornamental ridge. The scale of each tier and its sculptures is slightly smaller than that of the tier immediately below it. This helps to create the illusion of height, and adds to the symbolic importance of the building. Flanking the gopuram are a sculpture of Murugan on the right and Krishna on the left (as you enter). The sculptures are all of plaster, which allows for fine detailing. They are painted in a variety of bright colours, which adds to the visually spectacular quality of the gopuram.

The floor plan of the gopuram base block is rectangular, and is bisected by an entrance passageway. The entrance contains a pair of very large double leaf timber doors. The scale of these doors is intended to induce humility in the visitor and emphasize the diminutive human scale in relation to the divine. The doors are studded with a small gold bells arranged in a grid pattern. Devotees are supposed to ring as they move through. Footwear is also stored around the entrance area, as this is not allowed within Hindu temples, as a sign of respect.

The main entrance gopuram is only one of the entrances into the temple compound, which is surrounded by a perimeter wall. Side openings also exist, which open onto the flanking Pagoda and Temple Streets. However, these are mainly used as service entrances, with all devotees and visitors entering through the gopuram doors. The compound wall is also decorated with ornamental mouldings, as well as figures placed on top of the wall at various points, including several prominent seated cow sculptures.

Within the walled compound, the temple comprises a combination of covered halls, shrines and service areas as well as open to sky spaces. Leading directly from the gopuram entrance via a covered hall is a main prayer area, with richly ornamented columns and ceilings with frescoes. The ceiling paintings include a large mandala diagram.

Adventures in Singapore: Chapter 12: Buddha Tooth Relic Temple

Outside the Chinatown Complex was the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple & Museum. We heard the drums and ventured over, we happened to be visiting during this Buddha’s birthday celebration. Special services, gifts and offerings were made, and very abundantly. Buddhist monks shared chants and drums as part of the ceremonies, a large congregation of practicing Buddhists were leaving the temple as we were entering, we had come in at the tail end of the service. Visitors and photos were welcome and even encouraged, everyone was very kind as we were admiring the fine workmanship and intricacy of the details in the temple and statuary. Enjoy the photos below.

Adventures in Singapore: Chapter 11: Chinatown

It is odd to note that Singapore has a ethnic district called Chinatown when it’s largest population is Chinese, this stems from back in the 1800’s while under British rule the Chinese were a minority.

Chinatown is a fun market place to visit. We found some great deals on stuff – especially souvenir-y stuff. Deals like six key chains for $2 – unlike the one key chain I bought at Jurong bird park for $7 (although mine is quite nice and really I only needed one). And good prices for stickers and trinkets – must have items for my nieces!

We started our visit in the Chinatown complex, the main indoor market place and food stands (food court like), I had my first whiff of Durian in the air – It was early – most shops were just opening - we stopped off at a juice stand – fruit juiced – so many options – honey dew, dragon fruit, pineapple, watermelon, pear, apple, orange, passion fruit, even durian, and many more – some fruits I have never seen – great deal - $1 a drink – large too! we also had some delicious fried dough - puffs and sticks.

We did a lot of looking, a little shopping, then out to the streets.

The Baroque Italianate Victorian buildings were beautiful, brightly colored traditional details were like the US’s painted ladies, at the street level there is shop after shop, encompassing a number of streets, intersecting one another, a maze of eateries, produce and dry goods, massage parlors, tailors, and a myriad of items to buy. The streets were filled with amazing sights, sounds of a busy market place and smells both delightful and others less appealing.

Adventures in Singapore: Chapter 10: Sentosa Island

We started the day with a yummy breakfast at a restaurant on Dempsey Road, an English place with a tropical flair – great shop! Delicious! Jeff’s scrambled eggs toast and side bowl of bacon! Fruit & yogurt for Emma

My order: Pancakes – literally cakes baked in a pan with mangos and topped with ice cream and cane syrup, with a nice side bowl of bacon

I mentioned in Chapter 9, Sentosa Island felt like Pinocchio's Pleasure Island. See the picture from the movie on the right… look at the photos at the end of the post… Pleasure Island indeed! Check out it’s website: http://www.sentosa.com.sg/en/ Their slogan is “Sentosa: Asia’s Favorite Playground” Play ground indeed… this trip into Sentosa we drove, you pay a admittance fee to drive onto the island – like an entrance toll, and parking fees are a standard Singapore feature (they are set up like ez-pass toll scanners)

We already played around Imbiah Look out, our first stop was to Siloso Beach! We didn’t intend to get in, although Jen brought the girls a change of clothes (and I did too!) I had to take a dip in the straight of Singapore! (see the oil tankers in the background) The girls had fun too!

Atop Mt. Faber is a cable car terminal and some ritzy restaurants called the Jewel Box. The design is quite impressive I have pulled the descriptions below off their website: http://www.mountfaber.com.sg/ I was surprised there was mention of the restrooms – while I didn’t use the ones described, the outdoor grounds restroom were also impressive, I even photographed them, great signage, nice design with a mixture of textures: glass, stone, concrete, & tile.

At 106m above sea-level, Mount Faber is Singapore's third highest hill and a popular tourist destination. The Cable Car takes you across the Harbor to Sentosa Island - beautiful views of the harbor and city, we go through a building and arrive in Sentosa Island. To describe Sentosa Island, it reminds me of Pinocchio's Pleasure Island. It is a tourist , come for amusement draw. You can drive, as we do later – next post all on Sentosa adventures, but we traveled there first by cable car! See the Oil Tankers out in the water…

Adventures in Singapore: Chapter 8: The Southern Ridges & Henderson Waves

The Ridges comprises 9 km of green, open spaces spanning the hills of Mount Faber Park, Telok Blangah Hill Park and Kent Ridge Park. It is an area steeped in history and is home to some of nature's greatest gifts of flora and fauna. It is also one of the best spots in Singapore to catch panoramic views of the city, harbor and the Southern Islands.

Henderson Waves, a structure not to be missed, connects Mount Faber Park to Telok Blangah Hill Park. Standing at 36m above Henderson Road, it is worth visiting for its artistic, distinctive wave-like structure consisting of a series of undulating curved 'ribs'. The other highlights of the Southern Ridges are the Forest Walk and Canopy Walk - bridges cutting through the Adinandra Belukar, a distinct type of secondary forest. Here, you can see a rich variety of flora and fauna. You can also observe birds in their natural habitats. Walk on the Ridges and take beautiful photos of wild flowers and birds.

Admire the beautiful skyline as you stroll across this 274 metre-long pedestrian bridge that spans Henderson Road to connect Mount Faber Park to Telok Blangah Hill Park. At 36m above Henderson Road, Henderson Waves is the highest pedestrian bridge in Singapore. The bridge is also worth visiting for its artistic, distinctive wave-like structure consisting of a series of undulating curved "ribs". These “ribs” also double up as alcoves providing shelter to the public.

Singapore proved to be a Floral Dream. Orchids grow outside, orchids grow wild - everywhere! The tropical trees and plants were beautiful. I love taking photographs especially interesting close up shots of foliage. I have a vast photo collection of flowers and plants from my travels – I take the photo, not the flower! Adventures in Singapore: Chapter 6: Haw Par Villa

Haw Par Villa aka Tiger Balm Gardens is a very interesting place, off the beaten path, and certainly not a crowded tourist attraction – we enjoyed an almost completely private visit. It was an educationally odd experience. After the first bit of fun and amusing statues we got into more of the history, tradition and mythology, Emma (5) started out ok, then after the Ten Courts of Hell Entrance – she didn’t proceed beyond the entrance – she cried the rest of the time, refused to get out of the stroller, kept her eyes covered, declaring this was a scary place (some was, mostly not). Ethne (3) on the other hand romped around, played in the tunnels, and enjoyed the adventure – even the scary and really odd parts!

The park contains over 1,000 statues and 150 giant dioramas depicting scenes from Chinese folklore, legends, history and illustrations of various aspects of Confucianism. The attractions include statues of the Laughing Buddha and the Goddess of Mercy, as well as dioramas of scenes from Journey to the West which retells the classic Chinese legend of monk Xuanzang in his search of Buddhist scriptures. I think it would make for an excellent Miniature Golf Park… an easy transition, highlighting history, tradition, and cheap family fun!

History: In 1935, brothers Haw Boon Haw and Haw Boon Par -- creators of Tiger Balm, the camphor and menthol rub that comes in those cool little pots -- took their fortune and opened Tiger Balm Gardens as a venue for teaching traditional Chinese values. They made more than 1,000 statues and life-size dioramas depicting Chinese legends and historical tales, and illustrating morality and Confucian beliefs. Many of these were gruesome and bloody, and some of them were really entertaining. But Tiger Balm Gardens suffered a horrible fate. In 1985, it was converted into an amusement park and reopened as Haw Par Villa. Most of the statues and scenes were taken away and replaced with rides. Well, business did not exactly boom. In fact, the park lost money fast. But recently, in an attempt to regain some of the original Tiger Balm Garden edge, they replaced many of the old statues, some of which are a great backdrop for really kitschy vacation photos, and ditched the rides. Adventures in Singapore: Chapter 5: Durian Fruit.

There is this wicked looking fruit in Southeast Asia called Durian (duri= thorny an=building). I read about it on one of the online Singapore travel guides – it was described as smelling and tasting like “eating garlic ice cream while standing next to an open sewer” Wow! They weren’t kidding.

My first encounter was while walking through the market in Chinatown. there was this putrid smell – almost indescribably disgusting. Sickly with a brief bit of sweetness – but not sweet – rancid, rotten, decaying flesh with a spicy bitter bite of an aroma. It filled my sinuses, I couldn’t get the stench of it out of my nose for the rest of the day, it was one of those smells that cause a gag reflex reaction– it was powerful – and I was only down wind - I didn’t see any – but they were there. It wasn’t until I was at the wet market the next day that I was able to put a shape to the name and smell. I took a few snapshots See above & left) they just scream “Don’t touch me!” “Eat me if you dare” “danger, danger” (looking like a medieval weapon – swinging from a chain).

It is unfortunate and un comprehendible that anyone ever looked at the spiny, brutal thing and thought, “Hmmm, that grows on a tree – bet it’s a fruit – bet I could eat it.” It has a very, very hard outer casing- difficult to open – guess that was the fun part of the challenge! After getting it open and smelling it’s pungent fragrance I just can’t believe someone still proceeded to put it in their mouth – and (I gag to think of it) eat it! Apparently it isn’t that bad to eat – (reminder when ever someone says “not that bad” I remind them that still doesn’t mean it’s good) – I didn’t try it, I didn’t feel it was a necessary fruit to taste – I caught enough of the flavor in a whiff!I wasn’t privy to seeing the inner parts that clearly, a woman at the wet market was hacking away at the flesh and pith (above). You can see a cut version nicely opened I found on the internet, fruit resembles foie gras – from what I understand the texture and flavor are equally bizarre. They are a delicacy, called the “King of Fruit” enjoyed by those who eat them (on purpose).

There are some interesting advertisements for Durians- certainly caught my eye. While we were driving, I saw this huge billboard along a Singapore highway with this good looking guy sitting among a pile of Durians – and eating one… yeah right… apparently if you eat Durians you’ll be cool like this guy… everyone is eating them… don’t you want some too… I didn’t fall for this peer pressured ad. Then there is this sign I saw on the internet about CIMB Bank – I guess they are selling the idea: “King of Fruit = King of Bank”. There is even a Durian looking building in Singapore – the Esplanade.

Now before you think me biased against these fruits because I can not embrace another culture’s delicacies, I must let you know I am not the only person who feels this fruit is odd and smelly, after all it is featured on the Things that Stink website & there are signs on the MRT (subway of Singapore) and in hotels prohibiting Durians...

Adventures in Singapore: Chapter 4: Feeding the Lories

While at the Jurong Bird Park in Singapore, we stepped off the monorail and entered the huge Lorie Cage. Lories and lorikeets were everywhere and for $3.00 SGD one could enjoy feeding little cups of nectar to these delightful and friendly birds. This was my favorite part of the Bird Park!

I thought… If I put the nectar on my shoulder… perhaps a little Lorie bird will come and sit on me! It worked … and then another flew on!

Romping in the deluge that ran through an exhibit building from a short but very wet downpour! Singapore lesson #1 – always wear shoes that can get wet and always bring an umbrella! The rain came on all of the sudden, we were in an open outdoor caged exhibit watching the birds, huddled under our umbrellas then we ran for the exhibit entrance pavilion, which was a glass enclosure. water ran under the doors right through the center and out the other door, the ceiling showed the torrential soak! The girls enjoyed the splashing! The rain cooled off the day!

Adventures in Singapore: Chapter 2: Shopping Malls

Shop till you drop… Literally! Singapore is a shopping City-State. Malls are the thing. The Country is only 274.2 sq mi, with a population of 5,076,700 people (which is just under size of NY city, with about 3 million less people) and it has over a hundred Shopping Malls many of which are connected to each other and most are linked to the MRT subway system and more being built – not to mention the additional shopping areas that are non-mall, market style or shop boutiques. So as I read in the Singapore travel guides – a must do Singapore activity is Shopping – I didn’t realize it is a recreational sport here!

The overall shopping experience is a very euro-amer-asia chic vibe - It is truly a designer country – designer brands and labels, haute couture, a love for details and high quality. Retail is well designed and important – they are selling visually, after all selling is an art - you want to buy nice things when they are presented well – shopping it is an experience! The restaurants are beautiful - even the mall food courts are well designed with great lighting and furnishings and attention to details - my snapshots won't do them justice. You want to dress up to go shopping! Flow and traffic are well considered - overall the public spaces are thought through, buildings are interesting inside and out! Every Mall has an amazing water feature: I am certain having to do with the idea that water features activate good chi energy, by attracting good chi into your life it enhances your luck with work and wealth (it’s a little more involved than that but generally you want some form of moving water around). I probably passed many of these while we were driving about – but didn’t even know it!

Adventures in Singapore: Chapter 1: Welcome to Singapore

I spent the end of March in Singapore – visiting my Sister’s family (they are there for work for the next few years). It was a great trip - the jetlag has been rough (being on the opposite side of the world - 12 hour time difference - 24+ hr flight) I slept most of the time away on the planes (unfortunately not quality sleep), caught a few new flicks, enjoyed some of the scenery – we live on a beautiful earth – on the way home I saw the sun rise twice in one day – crazy, but beautiful!

Singapore is a grand place! We had many adventures: Great World City, Bread Talk, Jurong Bird Park, Orchard, Ion, Yakatori at Tori-Q, Canal Promenade, Chinatown, Arab Street, Persian Mirza Ghasemi, Wet Market, Holland Village, Cha Cha Cha, Mount Faber, Henderson Waves, Jewel Box Gondolas, Sentosa, Imbeian, Flora and Fauna, Vivo City, Shopping at Dim Arts Living, Dempsey Road, Coconut pancakes with Mango, Siloso Beach, Sentosa, Din Tang Fung –Baits and a taste of Chili Crab, Universal Studios, Candylicious, Little India, Singapore Flyer (Closed), Fountain of Wealth, Suntec, Cornery, custard filled fish shaped waffles, Diaso, Haw Par Villa, Café Brios, Singapore Zoo, Steamboat at Crystal Jade to name a few.

Three Souvenirs from every Trip

I am often asked by my clients, family, friends and others as they are about to embark on a trip or vacation “what should I get?” “what should I look for?” “what should I bring back for you?”

Interestingly enough, I am not that well internationally traveled – domestically yes; however, I do love to travel! I do know a great deal about the must do in international places, as I have planned many a trip I have yet to go on! I would assume I am asked this advice for a few simple reasons: I pay attention when I hear/ learn/ notice interesting travel tips, I research before traveling and I know how to and what to research, I love the magical details –those unique, off the beaten path, Kodak moments that make everything memorable and heighten the whole experience making it magical- and probably the best reason: I love sharing this information.

So here it is… My souvenir advice for every trip you take: (aside from the kitschy key chains and magnet)

The three souvenirs from every trip!

1. Something for you - your body! something to wear or for just your enjoyment. Clothing, Jewelry/ Gem Stones, Accessories, Bathing/ Body oils & soaps, Perfumes & Fragrances, Music, Costumes, learning a new skill, hobby,or certification, etc… Look for: hand made, locally produced, specific local styles, indigenous, exclusive, native, or items known from the area! then when ever you wear it or use it you will be reminded of that wonderful trip - but it doesn't necessarily scream souvenir! Think of your senses: Touch, Taste, Hear, Smell, and Sight! Ideas: silk scarf or painted hand fan from china, leather shoes or tailored suit from Italy, Scandinavian style woven sweater; coconut massage oil from the Caribbean, Dead Sea salt scrub, fragrant bath or hand soaps, cozy blanket; perfume; bag or purse, native dress – you get the idea! Some of my Favorite souvenirs: a fabulous deal on a Baroque Pearl necklace from a farmers market in Bremerton, WA; wood, shell and stone Jewelry from Dominican Republic – especially Larimar; Ammolite pendent from Calgary Canada, Lavender Linen Spray from the lavender fields in Sequim, Washington. Be prepared to know what you are looking for – do your research – know the value – haggle for a deal!

2. Something you share! something to enjoy in the company of others. (not the something's you bring back for others – so they can remember the place you went and they didn’t, although you should bring back a few things for the kids!) Food & Beverage seem to be the easiest sharing items: chocolates and candies, rare or exotic tastes, jams & jellies, cheese; also consider something special or unique to the area, music, an ingredient, a recipe, fragrances or linen spray, flowers or plants seeds or plantings (check with customs restrictions for foreign items), stories/experiences/ adventures; photos, games and toys, currency, etc… Ideas: Vanilla from Caribbean, Swiss chocolates, Canadian Maple Syrup, a fun game from Korea - Yut! My favorites: Mt. Rainer chocolates, Red oranges from Florida, Dominican Vanilla!

3. Something for your home: something you look at or use and remember – that was a wonderful trip – that has a story, let me tell you about that, and briefly, if only for a moment in your mind it takes you back! Art of any kind – native, local, or it just speaks to you!, photographs of landscapes/ cityscapes/ close up details (other than the picture of you in front of “X” – yes, you were there – scrapbook it, album it, save it, desktop frame it– but frame and hang the one that dates itself less), sculpture, artifacts, antiques, architectural remnants, rocks, minerals, china & dish ware, pottery, painted tiles, baskets, cookbooks, old & new books, old & new maps, shells, lighting, rugs, furniture, holiday decor – ornaments, so many options. Then when you look at it, it tells you a story, it reminds you of the occasion! Ideas: New Zealand Wool blanket, Italy: Marino glass chandelier, hand carved olivewood nativity from the Holy Land, Persian rugs from India or Middle East, local street artist painting from Paris… some of my favorites: Mayan artifact from Honduras, Local art from Santo Domingo, picnic basket from an antique mall in Poulsbo, WA

Just the Right Shoe

I have always loved shoes. I have owned hundreds of pairs of shoes. As a child I remember having shoe envy – I wanted the shiny black shoes that went tap, tap, tap down the halls at church, I wanted that tap, tap sound, everyone who was anyone had shoes that went tap, tap down the hall, when they went down the hall they would commanded attention. I wanted to wear them with white socks that had lace edging or white tights, that was the style – I eventually got a hand me down pair – it didn’t matter they were a little worn and scuffed – their heels went tap, tap down the hall until one day the church halls were carpeted. That was a sad day - no more tap, tap in the hall – so I would just have to take the long way around and walk across the gym floor to get to my primary class – tap, tap, tap all the way! Those were Sunday shoes, indeed.

My next dream pair of shoes were spectators or wingtips – I loved these shoes – they were in my grandmother’s hall closet, I would always try them on, I felt so sophisticated. I would play dress up all day and strut around in them – acting so adult. I still dream of owning a pair. For some reason they remind me of Easter Dresses and Sunday hats – and VFW dances, long before my time.

Why shoes? What’s the big deal, why is it inherently womanly to love shoes. I have some answers: Shoes are there with you at that big event and casual moments, they can make you look like a million or are purely functional when you need them, shoes travel and leave their mark, shoes tell a story, they set the stage, and they are the finishing touch, they are not always practical – sometimes splurges, sometimes bargains, and when you want to know someone better – you can walk a mile in their shoes – and embrace their experiences. And anyone who says no one notices your feet/ shoes are just oblivious – don’t believe me - just put on a pair of cute new shoes and people will inevitably comment - “I love your shoes! Are they new?”.

Outside the Snow Falling…

It is snowing – there is a blanket of snow covering the ground – it is still the wee hours of the morning, the world is still and quiet and I stand on the front step. I listen. I hear the stillness, the tiny crackles, the soft dimples of every snow flake landing on the frozen ground. It is one of my most cherished sounds, it is unique to snow falling in the night – it’s rarity makes it more special. Although the night sky is dark – snow clouds and the white covering reflect a mauve haze in the sky, with a brightness, not enough to see details nor shadows, but just enough to see the silhouette of trees and their snow covered branches and the white ground. There is a smell a taste in the air that only snow brings – a crisp, cold, moist air that conjures up the memories of fires in fireplaces, sips of hot cocoa, sled rides on hill sides, and snow days – the joy of childhood school is cancelled – snow days!

A Birthday in December…

Today is my Birthday – and over the years I’ve become a bit of a birthday bah humbug, certainly the typical birthday grimaces - getting older is always a highlight, grey hairs, body aches, funny lines, ever changing life plans, etc… but really - having a Birthday just 12 days before Christmas is just well – Bah Humbug. So when I was younger I made up a bunch of Birthday Rules (especially for Birthdays near Christmas):

Birthdays are special, unique, and personal.
Cakes should be pretty, and displayed on special cake plates adorned with candles in age specific qty or age symbolic.
There must be candles, they must be lit, they must be blown out,and there must be a wish made!
No Birthday gifts shall be accepted wrapped in Christmas paper.
No Christmas/ Birthday Combo Gifts. Really, would a June Birthday share gifts with Christmas? Perhaps an exception could be made - if it is worthy… house, car, big trip – you get it , truly combo worthy.
Seasonal Gifts, i.e. Christmas sweaters for a Birthday (for obvious reasons including: holidays are to be celebrated not worn), Strictly Winter activities and accessories – there are some but few exceptions with this, leave the seasonal activity for Christmas.
Adding to hobbies make for easy gifts and are personal – but some hobbies are private, sentimental collections or specific – inquire with in – feel free to be sneaky – but do inquire.
When it comes to clothing as a gift – gift cards , cash– most people purchase clothes in a non winter season – 2/3 months out of the year isn’t enough to warrant extreme wardrobe limitations – Christmas season clothing shopping is limited - great sales but limited selection indeed.
It’s my day – all day, It’s ok to take off work, go to lunch, do something extraordinary.
No major announcements, or other great distractions leading up to a birthday – really Christmas is enough.
Always hope for birthday snow – ok so this seems a bit backwards – but if it’s winter it should look it and a snow day is always welcome. (I usually get rain – today included)
Always buy yourself a gift – you’ll always get one thing you want – and it’s fun to figure out what you should get yourself! – hmmm… what do I really want this year?

I am sure there were more, I make lots of rules – these are the rules I remember – Ultimately birthdays need to be remembered.

I want to go where?…

Among my many lists, I am constantly writing lists of places/ experiences I want to go/ have. I have been writing these lists since I was very young – I dare say before I could write – I knew what I wanted and would plot how to get there. I will say I have done quite a few things on these lists, every once in a while I will find a list tucked in a book, on in a file and realize I have been there done that – got the key chain (T-shirts aren’t my thing). Here are ten places or experiences that are still on the list: (In no particular order of course)

1. Stay in an Ice Hotel… Brrrrr… I don’t know why I am so fascinated with these hotels made of ice, I am not in love with cold - I enjoy winter – but not as a permanent season. I don’t like cold food, I prefer no ice in my beverages –however, I do love - how snow covers everything, how quiet the world is when it is snowing, and watching each snow flake fall gracefully to the earth. Every year I wish for Birthday Snow – Dec 13th – every once in a while I even get it! No Ice Hotel in particular but perhaps the closest ice hotel in Quebec, Canada: Hôtel de Glace perhaps I could use that Canadian Money I still have from Calgary.

2. Beginning of US Route 1, in Fort Kent, Maine. Route 1 - I have traveled many of your scenic byways, I have walked along you, I live right off of you, you stretch from Maine to Florida, I have been to the end, I want to go to the beginning.

3. Crater Of Diamonds State Park, Arkansas. Why not! – I’ll dig for diamonds! I like shiny things!

4. I think I want to do this… The Devil’s Swimming Pool is located in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. During the months of September and December, one can venture out to the very edge of the 128 meter (420 feet) tall waterfall and swim around. I want to believe it’s quite safe- yet pee in your pants - thrilling – If I was already in Africa – perhaps for an African safari (also something I’d like to do) – and just a stones throw away in Sept. or Dec. I’d go – but would I specifically plan to go to Africa just for this purpose - probably not.

5. Towering 8000 feet (2430 m) high in the Andes Mountains of Peru sits the Inca ruins of Machu Picchu. I’ll take the train, thank you.

6. Petra, Jordan – ever since I watched Indiana Jones: The Last Crusade I have wanted to see this place in person.

7. The Great Pyramids of Giza – Just follow the Nile river to ancient tombs and ruins – ok, they’re kind of a big deal and probably on everyone’s list - here’s my angle - Egyptian design is so intriguing, a people who traveled, traded, conquered, ruled for centuries and yet their design was so little influenced by outsiders and so influential to the

8. Spend the night inside Cinderella's castle, Disney World. It’s magic – even the chance to stay there is by a magical chance (click to read an article about the magic!)

9. Stay in a French Chateau - of course I would love to own a chateau – and there are many on the market, but staying in one would be just fine – and there are many affordable options – I am keen on the Loire Valley Options or perhaps a rent-a- castle but the one that most interests me is the Chateau du Guerinet – I stumbled across this site years ago – I love that the Clemence Family, are your hosts – they boast of all the modern technology and conveniences yet it is like stepping into a fairytale. Save me a room!

10. Iceland – yes indeed the land of fire and ice- I was planning – seriously planning a trip there – travel books and all – then I learned Iceland Air offers a fantastic layover deal – extend your layover in Iceland for up to 7 days – quite the layover – well that’s my kind of offer – two trips for one! – but where to go for the other destination – and more importantly when – Do I want to play golf or ski at midnight (i really don’t do either – but daylight at midnight I just gotta) or do I go for the Fire and Ice Show – lava and glaciers all on the same trip, shop in Reykjavik, buy a traditional Icelandic sweater, swim and relax in the heated thermal waters of the blue lagoon, I’ve read there are incredible chefs making wondrous culinary delights, geysers (the only common Icelandic word), untouched meadow lands, whale watching, black basalt beaches, the northern lights, or my personal favorite: I want to go to this little island of the north side called Grimsey- the northernmost inhabited island off the coast of Iceland, going there means crossing the Arctic Circle, for which certificates are issued!

There are scads more… perhaps another 10 another time!

By the Light of the Silvery Moon…

December 1, 2009 - the Moon is full (exactly 98% full – tonight behind the rain storms it is 100% full) the air is crisp, the sky is clear, it is the Full Cold Moon or Full Long Nights Moon. 30 excited, warmly dressed people embark of a 4 mile hike by moonlight through the National Arboretum, this unique experience is considered one of DC’s best outings- who knew!

Incredible amount of planning goes into an arboretum – trees are slow growers- In planting a tree one may never see what it becomes. Many shades of greenish greys and blacks, some soggy and steep terrain – and my personal favorite lots of Moon Shadows! How I love moon shadows – I am fascinated that the moon has such a reflective quality that not only can we see it in some detail, but it also reflects enough light on the earth to allow us to see pretty clearly at night (sans color and great detail) and even cast shadows.

Highlights of the tour…

Capitol Columns – WOW! The original Capitol building’s sandstone Corinthian columns free standing in a courtyard in a meadow– the corners slightly up lit with the full moon behind beautiful – a sight not many can claim they saw!

A Capitol View - A network of rustic woodland trails follows the contours of Mount Hamilton, we followed the trail to the top of Mount Hamilton, one of the highest points in the District of Columbia. At this elevation of 240 feet above sea level, we saw an incredible view of the Capitol, Washington Monument, and the DC City Lights.

Quince Fruit Tree – Quince is a native fruit tree to Persia resembling a cross between an apple and a pear. This ancient fruit of antiquity was prized by Greeks and Romans alike. The fruit is very fragrant, aromatic, perfume like even.

Camellia Trees – all abloom – as we walked down a path there were these trees with fragrant blossoms, in the dark night the white blossoms glowed in the moon might.

Magnolia Leaves caught the moon light and glistened, almost wet looking they shined so brightly.

Cyprus Knees - These stubby projections are called the "knees" of the bald cypress tree. Bald cypresses grow where the soil is always wet (theirs was intended to grow next to a small pond), the knees are growths on the roots that help the "drowning" roots get the air they need.

Soil vs. dirt: Dirt is what you sweep off a floor, Soil is what plants grow in – 25% water, 25% air, 50% minerals and organic matter

Lancaster County

September 29, 2009: A day in PA.

As a child my grandfather would take me to Lancaster– aka Amish country, home of the Pennsylvania Dutch, he did a lot of business in the area with local iron foundries – he still does. There were some MUST DO’s on the visit. It has been good to repeat many of these places, this particular visit was a first for an old college roommate – who happened to be visiting for her 30th birthday (these are big b-days), who happens to be a German teacher by trade, and who happens to love food! So all in all the perfect place to bring her!

There are some distinctly Amish Flavors and Foods, what we did… where we went… what we tasted:

Starting out at Roots Market, in Manheim, PA - only the oldest single family-run country market in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. “From its humble beginnings as a poultry auction in 1925, Root's Market has evolved over the years to become a piece of Lancaster County heritage offering fresh food, family fun and a wide variety of items for sale.” Indeed! So part of the trip I was to bring back cabbages to make homemade sauerkraut. Cabbages fat as elephants -well they were huge I tell you! 48” - 54” in diameter! Lots of goodies and fresh baked goods including shoofly and whoopie pies. All sorts of right from the fields vegetables and fruits, a large assortment of meats: fresh sausage, smoked meats, fresh goose, duck, chicken, turkey, rabbit. One of my favorites from only from Pennsylvania Dutch Country Sweet Lebanon Bologna - a real smokey, sweet, tangy, lean summer sausage and farmer’s cheese - a mild fresh creamy flavored cheese. Remember to visit only on Tuesdays!

On to the next destination: Lititz, PA home of Sturgis pretzel factory and Wilbur Chocolates.

Julius Sturgis Pretzel Bakery: America’s first commercial pretzel bakery. Founded in 1861 by Julius Sturgis. Visitors are welcome to tour the facility and learn the history of pretzel making in America – and find pretzels baked with the same old-fashioned techniques pioneered by Julius Sturgis himself.

pretzel history in a nutshell - so back in the day - pretzels were soft – so an accident lead to an over baked crunchy pretzels much like we know them – however – pretzels as dried out crunchy bread twists – just aren’t the same with out that brown shell – for that to happen Julius Sturgis figured out that there must be a caustic solution applied to the pretzel to give it it’s golden brown outer shell – the process of making these crunchy pretzels, allowing them to bake, dry, and bake again – was new to bakers – he took a risk and look at us now – pretzels are everywhere! My official Pretzel Twister Certificate and practice pretzel – I will have to add this to my resume!

Then on to Wilbur Chocolate Factory …. mmm…. chocolate. A fun look at chocolate history – mmm… free samples! Beautiful chocolate concoctions - we only had a few minutes – we happened to be there on “closing and hour early for inventory day!” They are famous for their Chocolate buds – similar to and predate the also famous Hershey kisses and a much higher quality chocolate in a bite.

We followed with an enjoyable 18th century stroll along tree-lined streets walk through the quaint town of Lititz, and discussion of it’s Moravian Background and seeing Moravian Stars hung all around.

The Moravian Star: Originating in the Moravian boarding schools in Germany in the nineteenth century as an exercise in geometry, the stars were carried throughout the world by missionaries and other church workers, the star proclaims the hope of Advent. While we are most familiar with the white star, the first star had alternating red and white points. Stars colors have also included red and yellow, white and yellow, and a yellow "starburst" with a red center.

Whatever its form, the star reminds us of God, who caused the light to shine out of darkness and of the light which is the life of humanity. It reminds us of the promise of Abraham that his descendants would be more numerous than the stars; we are reminded of the star that pointed to the "great and heavenly light from Bethlehem's manger shining bright." The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. This is the message of the Advent star, which also points to Jesus, who said, "I am the bright and Morning Star." As we headed to East Earl, PA for dinner, we drove through Farming Communities.

Ending the day with a true taste of Amish Country – so when one wants to sample a lot of dishes it is best to go to a place where one can taste them all for one flat rate! Where better than the Largest Buffet in Lancaster - The Shady Maple Smorgasbord - The taste of Lancaster County, 200 feet of deliciously authentic Pennsylvania Dutch cooking! This place also includes a Massive Gift Shop, (the size of a department store) a Market, and a lunchette. this place is huge!

So the must try PA Dutch foods – bake limas (one of my favorites), dried corn (a roasted nutty flavored boiled corn kernels), Pies – Amish/ PA Dutch are known for their pies – in great variety particularly raisin and shoofly, whoopie pies – not my fav, but a must try – thick icing between two muffin top like cakes, also served are PA Dutch sodas rarely seen outside of this area – Birch beer, White Birch Beer, Sarsaparilla, Vanilla Cream, and of course Root Beer. A highlight you can even have a Free Meal on your Birthday! That’s a real value! Pennsylvania Dutch Foods are home-style, traditional, comfort foods, simple in flavor, seasonal tastes, much is German influenced with local flare. What have you tasted?

The area is rich in Religious and Cultural history, it is home to incredible craftsmen and artisans, unique tastes, and sights – anytime of the year it is a real treat to visit!

The Island of Hispanola

"Welcome Home" they greet us as we come into the resort. Home away from home - better - no cell phones, not checking email, no news, R & R in a much needed and enjoyable way! The Domincan Republic - A Beautiful Island bordered by the Atlantic, Carribean, and Hati. This was my second vacation here (first in 2007) and definitly not my last! August 7-14th at Dreams La Romana traveling through Apple Vacations - great service!

While I was there - I became PADI - Open Water Certified - 6 open water Dives all together! It's a whole different world beneath the surface!
After my last instructional dive - I am a real diver now!

Sorkeling Fun! So many beautiful Fish! The reef is very alive. On one swim I took along an underwater camera - Not bad photos! - Enjoy!

Boomtown

ASID brought me to Cincinnati, Ohio (Boomtown) for our Chapter Leadership Conference.

With a very tight schedule to keep - I did my travel & exploration research early to determine the best places to tour, what and where to eat, and how to get a round... only to find the Carew Tower which houses the hotel Netherland Plaza - where we were stayng & the confrence was held was to only MUST SEE place on the list -Easy!

Now, not to disrespect Cincinnati - it's a charming city - very clean and friendly, and certainly what I saw far exceeded my expecttions - but still not much there - out side of the typical go to any city and you can do the same kinda things - city attractions. There are other good Cincinatti Destinations just not part of this trip - but- if I were to return.

So here is what I did...

FYI - Fly into Kentucky - Taxi into Ohio

First Stop Cincinnati the Queen City- OK, Only Stop:

Carew Tower - 49 Stories - 574 feet above street level. The Carew Tower is the tallest building in Cincinnati (until the great american insurance building at queen city square is completed in 2011 - which will be 86 feet higher). Carew Tower is a National Historic Landmark, containing the Netherland Plaza Hotel (Hilton) & among other things a shopping mall, offices, and connections to many other fun shopping destinations and restaurants down town. It was designed to be a city in a city. built in 1929 - with an interesting story.

Overlooking fountain square - We were there for a Friday Night - Concert in the Square! - and wow! Tastey Ice cream all right in the heart of downtown Cincinnati, Ohio.

Also Overlooking the Ohio River waterfront - I am always on the lookout for veiws from the top - Carew Tower offers an observation deck - but it's a little tricky getting there - a few - like 2 -3 very small signs lead you to an elevator - taking you to a landing where you get on a two - person max elevator - and a very narrow staircase - which leads to a small room where an older lady - takes your $2 - and then out the door to to top of the Carew Tower and this view! on a clear day you can see for miles includling three states: Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio!

The Palm Court, the former Lobby and now the Restaurant "Orchids" is said to be the finest example of French Art Deco Architecture in the world - Indeed!

All in all - The hotel was a facinating example of Art Deco - Some Highlights.

Newport Rhode Island

Newport, Rhode Island, just saying that phrase, that place name... I can't help but sigh.

Hmmm... Rhode Island. If you have ever been there - really been there - you know exactly what I mean.

One of my favorite US destinations! I venture annualy to enjoy the New England Scenery (and lobster), Lavish Architecture, and Rich American History.

This particular trip I brought a number of fellow Interior Designers and Interior Design Students on a Travel with ASID Maryland Trip to tour the Newport Mansions. http://newportmansions.org/

Newport's history is remarkable in many ways, but perhaps the most unique aspect is that so much of its history is still visible on the landscape in an unparalleled concentration of preserved architecture.

Showcasing American Architecture and Design specifically: Colonial, Georgian, Victorian, Gothic Revival, Arts and Crafts Movement, and especially the gilded age of America and the Beaux-arts Style – Renaissance – Baroque – Rococo and more! With lavish details and rich history, America’s first new port later becomes the Queen of Resorts, where in great architects and designers Richard Morris Hunt, McKim Mead and White, Peabody and Stearns, and others build the "summer cottage" mansions for the American elite for which Newport has become famous.

Meet me in St. Louis

I was in St. Louis in March for an ASID President's Forum Conference - and like all great trips - not to be confused with vacations - I packed as much in as possible!

Arriving early morning checking in at the hotel - Great 18th Story veiw of the Arch and Waterfront! Thank you Hyatt!

Then jumping into a cab and heading to the Cahokia Mounds in Illinois!

Why you may ask? Why would I spend time traveiling to see piles of dirt? Why not! You see I first learned about Cahokia while traveiling accross the country in 1991 with my fam. - the museum had just opened in 1989, which was a pretty big deal - we saw signs - it peaked our interest - so we made a side stop - it was so facinating! so memorable we still talk about it - so... Why not stop by when I was only 15 min away! Things to report - Mounds are still there - Mueseum has not changed at all since my 1991 visit and No the video that is showing (which is excellent) is not for sale - but another video is and although has alot of the same parts - it's not the same or as good. but you can watch the good one here: http://www.cahokiamounds.com/learn/video then click on the View: City of the Sun Link at the bottom of the page.

So what' s this place all about? if you didn't watch the 15 min video here's the story in a nut shell... Here lies the remains of the most sophisticated prehistoric native civilization north of Mexico.

Pretty Intereseting! Right!

According to archaeological finds, the city of Cahokia was inhabited from about A.D. 700 to 1400. At its peak, from A.D. 1050 to 1200, the city covered nearly six square miles and 10,000 to 20,000 people lived here. Over 120 mounds were built over time, and most of the mounds were enlarged several times. Houses were arranged in rows and around open plazas, and vast agricultural fields lay outside the city. The fate of the prehistoric Cahokians and their city is unknown, but the decline seems to have been gradual, beginning around the 1200s. By A.D. 1400 the site had been abandoned. http://www.cahokiamounds.com/

So I ran up to the top of the largest mound - enjoyed the view of St. Lo. Mo. & took in the power of the people that came before - and ran down - I had to get back to St Louis - the morning was yet young!

Dropped off at the River Front area I quickly went straight to the Arch - Gateway to the West

There are just certain things you MUST do when in certain places - How could I go to St. Louis and not go up to the top of the Arch.... but time was a ticking - the conference starts at 2pm - Security lines were long and slow (by the way there are two entrances - one with a line and one with out) I head over to the "get up there" line and wow with in minutes, the next availible tram was in an hour... it woul dbe tight but it was possible! Any time anyone asks you if you are clostrophibic before selling you at ticket - let that stand as a serious question - not to be taken lightly!

We are herded like cattle at Disney to get on these "Capsule Trains" this interior - elevator that not only goes up but sideways - Five to a Pod. then shut the door and begin - So back to the Clostrophobic part - I'm not clostrophbic - I like my space but confined spaces aren't diableing or terribly nerv racking - but to this guy on my pod this was the end - his family - wife and teenage daughters - took a vote and p they went - he doesn't like these things apparently - and his kids liked reminding him how crowded and small and old and you get the idea I couldn't wait to get out myself! - Lesson: Heed all lessons from service personel when warnings are offered.

Got to the top and wow - there was some movement... but look at that view - I've always enjoyed seeing for miles -views from mountain tops, amusment park rides, airplanes, and monuments.... this was quite the veiw - from the very small windows!

Then back down - much more comforatable! - no one with issues...

The Arch is the tallest national monument in the United States at 630 feet; it is the city's best known landmark and a popular tourist attraction.
Construction began February 12, 1963 and the last section of the Arch was put into place on October 28, 1965.
The Arch is a structure known as a catenary curve, the shape a free-hanging chain takes when held at both ends, and considered the most structurally-sound arch shape. The span of the Arch legs at ground level is 630 feet, the same as its height.

Each year, approximately a million visitors ride the trams to the top of the Arch. The trams have been in operation for over 30 years, traveling a total of 250,000 miles and carrying over 25 million passengers.

The Arch weighs 17,246 tons. Nine hundred tons of stainless steel was used to build the Arch, more than any other project in history.
The Arch was built at a cost of $13 million. The transportation system was built at a cost of $3,500,000.

In order to ensure that the constructed legs would meet, the margin of error for failure was 1/64th of an inch. All survey work was done at night to eliminate distortion caused by the sun's rays. Since the Arch was constructed before the advent of computer technology, relatively crude instruments were used for these measurements.

The Arch sways a maximum of 18" (9" each way) in a 150 mph wind. The usual sway is 1/2". - Yes I Could feel a little movement while at the top!

2008 Year in Reveiw

It seems the older I become the faster time passes, I remember when time seemed to almost stand still and now there is just not enough. This year has been a technological milestone for me; I am now a lap top toting, GPS relying, qwerty texting and blackberry using fiend – I don’t know how I ever lived without this stuff, so horribly convenient and addicting - I don’t use (or even know how to use) half of the features. As I mentioned last year I thought I start a blog – I did- but never posted anything further – if I decide to post my own soap box rants and the tid bits of my crazy life I’ll be sure to send a press release! For now I have become a more proficient facebook-er! Join if you are not yet on there – if you are look me up! It’s been a great way to reconnect with people!

The Profession: The Interior Design industry continues to grow, my residential business is steady and I continue to expand my commercial projects –a lot of church designs lately – many different denominations – it has been very fascinating, each has very distinct design needs. Great year for publicity – quotes, articles, and photos in a number of publications! I wrapped up my 9th Show house and just previewed the 10th! Photos at www.lckinteriors.com As of Oct 1st, I am the President of the Maryland Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers - I have an excellent board -we have already set the bar higher and continue to grow and support our profession. This coming spring semester I begin a new venture - teaching college - I was asked to create and teach a Historic Color, Ornament, and Textiles Class (right up my alley!) – my syllabus is ready, text books selected, I am now preparing my lectures and exams! The semester begins the end of January, best part I am combining the class final project with a real historic project (see community) wish me luck! We’ll see how professor-ing suits me – never know where this might lead.

Community: As always I enjoy my involvement in various community organizations, highlights include being on the board of the Friends of the Perry Hall Mansion- Historic Restoration Project http://www.perryhallmansion.org/ we have had a very successful first year of the organization - raising awareness and funds, offering tours, events, products for sale, and delving into history! Construction for updating the HVAC/Electrical/Plumbing starts this spring – then the real fun begins! In February, I will finish my second term as VP of the Republican Club of Northeast Baltimore County; what an election year to be so politically involved! It will be nice to take a back seat to politics for a little while and focus on other things!

Church: Early August I was released from the Stake Young Women’s Presidency – then Mid October put right back in- same position, I guess my time wasn’t quite up- still serving as the Second Counselor in the Stake Young Women’s Presidency – my role now is primarily bridging the two presidencies we are amid preparations to take the youth to Kirtland, OH for Youth Conference this coming July and 2009 Girl’s camp follows right behind. This past year’s Girls Camp proved to be a bit more of a challenge - we changed locations and spent the week at a tree house camp – quite fun but a bit more rustic an outdoor cook ‘hut’ with 2 faulty outlets and no fridge - meals were tricky but we prevailed – we hiked part of the Appalachian trail, went tubing in the Potomac river (MD/VA/WVA portion not the DC murkiness!) and I took the Youth leaders (16-18 yr olds) Geocaching! We had a blast! Visit: www.geocaching.com more fun than one should have with a GPS all around the world! I have certainly enjoyed working with the Young Women over the past few years.

Travel: Seemed like more travel for business than pleasure this year, but I do love a good trip! I found myself in all mountainous areas East and West! – End of April in Provo, Utah for my Sister’s Graduation from BYU- nice to visit campus again (She is now in grad school at University of Maryland) and my Brother and Sis-in law came down from Idaho too! May –Poconos, PA with the nieces for a few days- good to outnumber them- 3 adults to 2 kids! We had so much fun at the indoor water park resort! June –Girl’s Camp in Western Maryland (see church). July - ASID leadership training Conference took me to Calgary, Canada – Wonderful City! – I extended my stay and spent a few days in Banff - the Canadian Rockies were incredible - what a beautiful part of the world - Lake Moraine was my favorite (see photo) brilliant blue-greens! October – St George, UT I put on my wedding planner hat – wedding was beautiful –reception so unique and well dressed - held in an airplane hangar! - I was able to squeeze in a bit of pleasure – spending time with friends, a drive though Zion’s Nat’l Park, and the trip ending in Fabulous Las Vegas catching up with a college roommate and a enjoying a luxurious hotel deal – only in Vegas! My Sis’s Fam. “the Nieces” now live just over an hour away in N. VA. It is grand fun being an Aunt! – I have been able to pop in on them on often, wind them up, spoil them a bit, lots of hugs, presents, fun, and leave!

Oh, Canada!

I spent a week in Calgary/ Banff area in July 2008 - an extended ASID Conference becomes a brief Vacation spot the exotic and foreign lands of Alberta Canada! Beautiful place! Loved flying in over the miles of canola fields - a vibrant yellow like I have never seen. Calgary was nice - western style city - I thought it felt a lot like Denver - very friendly - clean and easy to maneuver- with some fabulous eateries - but Banff - Oh, the scenery!

Almost there!

I Left my Mark! The Cosmic Ray station national historic landmark building - had thousands of signatures all over the building from many of the people who have made it there... I had to leave my mark too! -I'd like to think of it as leaving the flag on the Moon- Marking that I was there - not so much defiling and graffiti-ing a Canadian National Landmark! I had a sharpie in my back pack - always comes in handy! and very inconspicuously left my name and date(next to the door if you are ever there and want to see)!
